Why weren't my fish electrocuted?

Because your feet or body was touching the ground you "earthed" the power and the electricity went through you to ground. You were lucky not to be killed!!. The fish were not earthed and hence no circuit was created through them and so they did not suffer any ill effects. It the same reason birds can sit on a power cables but you can't climb up a pylon and touch them.
