How does one electrocharge metal so there is no over-spray?

We are repainting a sand buggy which is almost all metal tubing. We have sanded off the old clear coat and masked the engine, now time to paint. But with the tubing, we feel we'll waste a lot of good paint. We've heard it's done when painting wrought iron gates, but can it be done with a vehicle?
